OCR: GAS ENGINE CARBURATOR AND FUEL INJECTION The gas engine requires that a mixture of fuel and air be drawn into the cylinder during each intake stroke. In order to meet the sometimes conflicting requirements of economy, power and exhaust emission regulations over a wide range of engine speed and load, two basic methods are now in common use, the carburator and the fuel injector. CARBURATOR The carburator introduces fuel into the air stream by means of a venturi section, which is a streamlined constriction in the carburator barrel. When air is drawn through the venturi, the pressure is reduced in the throat section and fuel is drawn up from the float bowl through a metering orifice in the main jet. The fuel then mixes with the air moving toward the cylinder intake.
